Confessions of a Recluse

When I was a kid, I was scared of the garbage truck. When it would pull up to the curb with it's big, blue, can-grabbing claws, I would hide below the front room window. Also as a kid, I would take 'time off' from my friends (but not much). I even grounded myself once for staying up after my bedtime to watch Dave Matthews on Letterman.
It will comfort you to know that I am still wierd.
I was talking to a friend the other day, and I confessed to him that when I'm home alone and someone comes to the door, I avoid any windows, lock myself in the bathroom and wait until the dog stops sniffing at the front door before I come out. When the phone rings, I wave my hands at Brian and mouth the words I-AM-NOT-HERE.
So, if you call, and I don't answer, or if you drop by unannounced and I don't come to the door, I'm probably just locked in the bathroom.
But don't feel bad. It's not you. It's me.

I almost NEVER answer my door. Haven't since I've been married. I think because I don't feel established enough to have anyone I know (read: wardies) come to my home. So whoever it is ringing the doorbell can't be anyone I want to see. It never is. It's a woman selling strawberries, or a Qwest agent trying to get me to switch, or some teenager trying to get me to buy a subscription to a magazine so he can go on a trip to Hawaii.

Also? I remember when you grounded yourself. I was amazed. Also, a little jealous. As the oldest of three, (at the time) days on end in my house alone (for a large chunk of the day) sounded so foreign and fun.

Abby, you are not weird. Rather, you are Abby. Jack has come up with phrases like, "That is such a Lindsay thing to do" or "Only Lindsay would say that." It makes more sense and sounds a lot better than "weird".
I love your blog!
