I'll Take The No T.V. Challenge for 200, Trebek.

I know I haven't posted in a while. Am I still considered a blogger? Probably, just a casual blogger. Not a high blogger or a professional blogger. I merely dabble. Dabble in bloggage.

The reasons for my absence? Well, we've been busy with company and on vacations to sunny San Jose, and summer term started up.

Needless to say, with Brian and I both working and going to school (I should come up with a word for that-whooling? schorking? Schorking. Now there's a word I can get behind.), we have been very busy. We've been busy for years. It's nothing new. Only lately, it's started to drive us a little insane. Both of us (but mostly me) forget that there are only 24 hours in a day and that we work at least 10 out of those 24. And then there's homework. And don't even think about laundry, scrubbing toilets, floors or windows. Oh, and honey? How do you feel about Ramen again? Or we could really spice it up and go for a grilled cheese sandwich. Oooh, fancy.

We have both felt a desire to simplify our lives. Brian (and here's where some of the insane stuff comes in) has wanted to get rid of a lot of our stuff, live on less, buy less, save more, live in an itty bitty place. Not because we have to, but because we can. And we should. (?) You know, be minimalists and stuff. We've even talked about selling...get ready for it...the T.V.

How DARE we!? How COULD we?! But we do dare, and we just might.

We're doing a test run now. It started last Friday. The house still hasn't gotten cleaned, but it's not a disaster, either. I've had some great conversations with my husband, and I've gotten a lot of reading in. I'm even almost caught up with my National Geographics that mean so much to me.

What is so amazing about T.V. anyway? When I'm watching it I feel like I'm waiting for something else to happen. "Oh, I'll just sit here and watch T.V. while I wait for ____________." Something, anything, the phone to ring, someone to knock at the door, the Second Coming, who knows. But then, nothing ever happens. And what have you done? Wasted your precious time. Have you created anything? Have you bettered yourself? Have you had any amazing, face to face conversations? Have you learned anything? Then what's the point?

I often complain that I don't have time to read and write. I often hear my mom complain that she wants more time to paint. Everyone wants more time, and they just don't seem to know how to get a hold of it. I think I have the answer...

:) You are a better person than I am, then. There's something so relaxing to me about the mind-numbing effects of TV after a long day of work. Even just for a half hour or so, the only part of me having to concentrate is my right thumb, clicking through the channels. And now I feel all guilty-like, as we search for a three bedroom. AH! MY CARBON FOOT PRINT!

Your no-TV post reminded me of a nice little sotry in this month's Ensign; it's found in the biography on Henry B. Eyring.

The TV story begins (p. 13) with Henry B. Eyering’s boys watching Saturday Night Live. The story ends with the boys coming home from school the next Monday: "We found the television set in the middle fo the floor with a huge crack through the thick glass screen. We immediately suspected Mother. When confronted, she responded with a perfectly straight face: 'I was dusting under the TV, and it slipped.’”

I love your blog so much. Your posts are so entertaining, you definatly have a talent for writing that I'm jealous of!
I love the no TV idea, especially when you mention the good talks you get to have with Brian in it's absence. Too often Jay and I spend the precious time we have together in front of the TV. Or I'll be sitting with Kameryn and realize that I've just spent 20 minutes watching "The Aristocats," which I've seen a MILLION times. Good luck in your efforts, I admire you.

I'll second that. Although I do love my MTV smut, I do think to myself all to often, 'there is so many more good things that i could be doing,' then i fall asleep. My hat's off to you!
